Morningstar | Libra's Implications for Our Financial Services Coverage: We're Not Worried Just Yet

Facebook has announced plans for Libra, its new digital currency set to launch in 2020, making it the first major company to attempt to bring cryptocurrency into the retail mainstream. Overall, we are not yet worried about a negative impact on economic moats in financial services. Libra is a cryptocurrency that will be built using blockchain technology. It will be run by a consortium, with Facebook as the lead until the end of 2019, at which point all members will have equal power. It will start out as a "permissioned blockchain," with the ambition to move toward "permissionless" over time. L...

Morningstar | Western Union’s Growth Slows a Bit in the 1Q

Western Union saw its underlying growth flagged slightly in the first quarter, with reported revenue down 4% year over year, and up 2% on a constant currency basis. However, management stated it expects results to improve a bit later in the year and largely held its underlying full-year guidance. We think the company remains poised to maintain its leadership position in the money transfer industry, but don’t see a clear path to better growth. Further, while it has not been an issue to date, we remain concerned about regulatory risk given the current U.S. administration. We will maintain our $2...

Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Market rangebound; Upgrading Services In last week's Compass we made several observations which led us to be cautious. All of the concerning observations have since reversed as the market found support: the U.S. dollar weakened, defensive areas underperformed, cyclical areas held at logical support, high yield spreads narrowed, and the 10-year Treasury yield found support. These positive developments are encouraging, however we believe the market remains rangebound. • S&P 500 levels. We believe the market remains in purgatory as technical indicators remain mixed. We see the S&P 500 remaining...
