Seeking a clue on how the US Fed will act Ahead: Trade rhetoric, ECB meet, US inflation. On the trade front, US and China exchanged good will yesterday (China announced a list of US goods exempt from last year’s 25% import tariffs – agricultural products not included; in return, Trump delayed the next round of tariffs by two weeks). The news lifted markets after Russia’s close and the optimism is certain to wash over to today. Investors are largely optimistic ahead of the next round in October, but may find themselves disappointed if a comprehensive deal is expected. Meanwhile, Trump continue...

MARKET COMMENT - WEAKENING RUBLE DRAGGED ON STOCKS; ITALY, FINANCIALS, OIL IN FOCUS TODAYRussia underperformed peers yesterday, the RTS falling 0.8% to 1,259 versus a 0.4% gain for the MSCI EM. A nearly 1% rally just before the close failed to fully offset the rest of the day's losses. Much of Russia's underperformance came through the ruble, which fell 0.8% between the Monday and Tuesday Moscow closes before rebounding to USD/RUB 66.46 this morning. A weaker yuan and German GDP dragged on global markets. Italy's political saga, company financial reports and weekly oil data are in focus today,...

CIS Market Daily - 28

US-China rhetoric falls short, UST inverted Ahead: Adrift, lacking conviction; Buying weakness may be at play. Russia is likely to track the patch of global bourses, which continue to drift on a mostly sobering backdrop. US markets turned south and Asian markets are choppy on expectations of a protracted US-China trade war, which elevated recession fears – the 2-10 UST yield curve again inverted. Aside from their rhetoric of being willing to return to the negotiating table, neither camp has shown any sign of compromise. Brent offers a lift, though – the asset is finding support from the sharp...
